The United Nations Centre for Human Settlements (Habitat) promotes sustainable human settlements development through policy formulation, capacity-building, knowledge creation and the strengthening of partnerships between governments and civil society. In 1996, the United Nations General Assembly designated Habitat as focal point for the implementation of the Habitat Agenda, the global plan of action adopted at the second United Nations Conference on Human Settlements. The Centre, established in 1978, is the lead agency for coordinating human settlements development activities within the United Nations family.
